Phuket migrant worker arrested for beating friend to death

PHUKET: A Myanmar national was arrested last night (Oct 14) for beating his drinking buddy to death in Wichit on Tuesday night.

Lek admitted to killing his friend after they had a heated argument following a long drinking session.

Wichit Police, led by Deputy Superintendant Lt Col Pichet Cheinphet, arrested 39-year-old construction worker named only as Lek on an arrest warrant issued by Phuket Provincial Court on October 14 for assault causing death.

He was arrested at the downtown market on Ranong Rd in Talad Neua.

The beating occurred at 8pm on Tuesday, but police were only alerted of the death after the body was found in front of a three-storey shophouse in the residential area of Soi Sookniran 8 off, Chao Fa East Rd, at about 8:20am on yesterday. (See story here)

The victim’s identity was revealed by police a fellow Myanmar construction worker named Keng aged 35.

Lek told police that at 5pm on Tuesday he was drinking with four friends including Keng and at about 7pm two friends left and he and Keng continued drinking. Before calling it a night, the two men had a heated argument and this is when Lek attacked Keng.

The next day Keng was found dead near the gate of the shophouse with his head and face severely beaten.
